Wiki Page: Q. I am designing based on GOST code where I have entered a nozzle joint efficiency of 0.9 but in the report the joint efficiency is considered as 1. When I run the same model changing the design code to ASME, the report shows joint efficiency=0.9, Why?

Ans: The setting for the nozzle joint efficiency for eg. nozzle 'D' in question is as follows in the nozzle dialog box: As shown above the joint efficiency has been set as 0.9. In the report it is 1.0: This is because ASME and GOST have different rules with respect to nozzle joint efficiency. See the paragraph from GOST below: Hence following the rule above: 1. The value of phi = 1, since the distance of the nozzle outer from the right tangent line (X) is more than 3s for nozzle D: 2. For the value of phi1, following the rule above (refer to the sketch in the GOST paragraph above), the long seam weld of the nozzle neck made from plate is assumed to be beyond 60 deg from the longitudinal seam weld of the shell. This is programmed into the software assuming good practice and user unfortunately cannot change this value hence phi1 is always 1. If for example the nozzle D is shifted very close to the right tangent line and a self reinforced nozzle is used such that the outer surface of the nozzle is less than 3s distance from the right tangent line, the value of phi in the report is considered 0.9.
