Comments, Questions, and Answers about Save Default Settings:

Q1. What start up settings can be customized to be automatically set when a new model is created?

Answer: From AutoPIPE online help:

The Tools/Model Options/Save Defaults command allows the user to save all customized system parameters in the current model as defaults for all newly created models in the current directory using the File/New menu option. Options which are saved in the defaults file (AUTOPIPE.DFL) include the General, Edit, and Results Tools/Model Options dialogs. If a new model is created in a working directory, the defaults file in the working directory will be used first. If the defaults file does not exist in the working directory, then the defaults file in the program directory (if existing) will be used instead.Note: To revert to the original AutoPIPE defaults for a new model, delete the AUTOPIPE.DFL file from the AutoPIPE program directory.

As a suggestion, create Template files. Another words, similar to using MS Word, create template files to be used when  starting a new document, in AutoPIPE, create various starter models for a specific project with all the PipeID, Load cases, number of thermal cycles, piping code, Tool Model Options settings, etc... already set, save it using File> Model Management> Save Archive command as a APC file in a project folder, and when someone needs to create a new model, copy the model from the project folder to a new location, use File> Model Management> Open Archive, save the file as a new model and start working.

Q2. Is it possible to save Pipe IDs between models?

Answer: No, you cannot save PipeID's directly to another model.

However, suggest creating a master model. In this master model create short runs of pipe that will have verious different PipeID associated with them. When working in a new model, Import this master model  into the current model thereby automatically creating the PipeID's to match the imported piping.

Q3. Can I import combinations between files?

Answer: Yes, on the Tools> Combinations> press the "Combination Options" button, near the bottom of the listing is a command "Import Combination File".

Another menthod, model XYZ.DAT has a list of combination that you want to use in model ABC.DAT. Confirm the same load cases and analysis sets are in both models. After confirmation, close AutoPIPE and perform the following:  open the folder where XYZ.DAT file is located and copy XYZ.CMB file to the folder where model ABC.DAT is located, rename the copied file in the new folder location as ABC.CMB. Start AtuoPIPE, the combinations should be available.

Note: the CMB filename must match exactly the same as the DAT filename (except for the file extension)  for this file manipulation to work.

Wiki Page: Imported NTL Errors from PCF tanslated file

$

Issue #1:

The following is found in the MSG log file:

*** ERROR: INVALID THICKNESS GIVEN. PIPE IGNORED.
*** ERROR: UNSUPPORTED OR UNRECOGNIZED ELEMENT TAG.

Solution #1 :

After converting PCF file to NTL file with the AutoPIPE translator, open the NTL files in any text editor program,  search for all occurrence of "PIPE", the 2nd entry is supposed to be the wall thickness (Please see the following AutoPIPE help section: Help > Contents> Search Tab> enter "PIPE - Pipe Data" (include the quotes), press List Topics button, double click on the selected topic from the list provided to see more information). AutoPIPE does not allow a negative wall thickness. Remove all the -ve signs (ex "-9.00" should be "9.00",save the file, and open in AutoPIPE.

Solution #2:

After converting PCF file to NTL file with the AutoPIPE translator, open the NTL files in any text editor program,  search for all occurrence of "COMPONENT-ATTRIBUTE4", this value should start with a  number (ex. “COMPONENT-ATTRIBUTE4 204-AFRA-0300”,  or “COMPONENT-ATTRIBUTE4 600-FPA-0800”). The following is NOT acceptable: “COMPONENT-ATTRIBUTE4 -0011-0011”, notice the first character was a “-“ character instead of a number. Per this example, insert a valid number before "-0011-0011".

Issue #2

The following is found in the MSG log file:

*** ERROR: MATERIAL FILE NOT FOUND.

Answer: Be sure that the material file (xxx.LIB) specified on the PCF translator dialog screen is actually in the AutoPIPE directory folder. If not, select a material library that is in the folder.

Example:On the PCF translator dialog screen, material library = B313-12, AutoPIPE 9.5.x and lower does not have ASME B31.3 2012 piping code or material LIB file. Therefore, must change PCF material library to a LIB file available in the respective version of AutoPIPE.

Issue #3

The following is found in the MSG log file:

*** ERROR: INVALID DIAMETER GIVEN. PIPE IGNORED

Answer: From reading the complete error message:

*** LAST NODE PROCESSED: 36
PIPE PIPE4               0.000SSTD           0.000
*** ERROR: INVALID DIAMETER GIVEN. PIPE IGNORED.

AutoPIPE needs to have a value for pipe dia. >0.000.

Avoidance: open NTL file in any text editor (i.e. NotePAD), search for the indicated node point (ex. 36), should find following:

RUN  36                  0.000     0.246     0.000
RVER 1.7
PIPE PIPE4               0.000SSTD           0.000
    *A106-A
    *                    0.000     0.000     0.000

Increase pipe size>0.000, can always change final pipe size inside of AutoPIPE, set default pipe size to 2.000 as shown below:

RUN  36                  0.000     0.246     0.000
RVER 1.7
PIPE PIPE4               2.000SSTD           0.000
    *A106-A
    *                    0.000     0.000     0.000

Save model file and try to open with AutoPIPE.

The following section will contain questions and answers pertaining to modeling vessels and/or nozzles in AutoPIPE.

Item #1:

Could you please advise how to properly model a nozzle at the dished end. We have modeled using nozzle flexibilty option (using "spherical" in flexibility method) Length = head thickness. Then we triedwith the "user" input in the flexibility method using the stiffness values from the "spherical" option but the results are completely different between using "spherical" and "user" selection.

Answer:

As you already know the nozzle flexibilities calculated for a Spherical head are Radial and Bending stiffness of the nozzle, where  User flexibilities fields are Radial, Circumferential, and Longitudinal stiffness of the nozzle. In the background, AutoPIPE use flexible joint elements to model a nozzle.

The stiffness calculations for Nozzles connected to cylindrical vessels are more sensitive to diameter of the pipe.

The difference with your modeling is to be sure that the  Radial direction is the same for both User and Spherical stiffness's, and that Spherical Bending values/directions matches the User's Cir & Long values/directions.

Consider the following, if you are using the flexibility method = User, what direction is Rad, Cir, Long  given global X, Y, & Z. In AutoPIPE a vessel is modeled as a pipe component. So the program does not know which direction a nozzle element Rad, Cir, Long is until you specify the direction of the vessel.

Direction of vessel = Global Y, that means Long. is Global Y and Rad. & Cir are set to Global X or Z.

Direction of vessel = Global X or Z, That mean Rad. is set to Global Y, Long. is set to Global X or Z and Cir is set to Global axis left over.

Again, by defining  the nozzle element vessel direction, you are setting direction for Long and consequently Rad and Cir.

Item #2:

What is the best method of evluating a nozzle load to see if they exceed manufacture stress requirement limits?

Answer:  Insert a Reference Point to Evaluate Equipment Loads

Use the Insert > Xtra data > Reference Node feature to define reference points to evaluate loads at vessels or rotating equipment.

Works in either Global or local coordinate systems. So anytime the nozzle is at a skewed angle to the vessel and the allowable loads at the nozzle are given relative to the nozzle axis then use the local coordinate axis system.

You can define multiple "Reference Points" at any point.

HINT: Useful for evaluating in-line pump nozzles and manufacturer stated limits on vessels or equipment.

You would like simply to rename the segment after D to show up as A (get sequence like D, A, H, B etc..) or get logical order A, B, C, D etc.

For segments re-order check under drop menu Edit > Segment > Reorder . In this dialog you can reorder segments, by typing in numbers in the Order column and clicking the Re-order button will Re-Name the segments. E.g. for 2 segments A and B which appear as order 1 and 2 respectively. To make segment A be B and vice versa, simply enter Seg A order = 3 or higher than Seg B order = 2. Clicking the Reorder button will re-sort the segment naming.

The operating condition is not generated by the program default, I was merely following your assumption. The manifold is subsea so the operating condition have to take hydrodynamic loadings and external tie-in loads into account... What do I need to look for then?

Problem:

The following appears when I open  a model:

 ---------------------------
Error
---------------------------
E723-23:  System is not complete for analysis purposes
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

How to resolve?

Answer:

Must review the entire model looking for incomplete components, using the Solid model view feature, look for transparent pipe, typically bends such as the following:

This bend point radius is too large. The bend's Near or Far point would occur outside of the next node point, (ex. B76 above). Or the origin point of a segment is a bend that is not configured with a Near point as shown above (ex. B16)

Options:

a. reduce the bend radius so the entire bend can be displayed with the space allowed befor the next node point.

b. Or, select the bend point and press Modify> Convert Point to > choose Point. However, then you will encure another warning message, 90 deg kink in pipe that will need to be addressed.

c.  Or, select the bend point and press Modify> Convert Point to > choose Tee, and then add a third segment to complete the tee.

d. Or insert a short pipe segment before the point to provide directionality for the entire bend to be displayed.
