Applies To Product(s): AutoPIPE, Version(s): 2004, XM, & V8i Environment: N/A Area: Error message Original Author: Bentley Technical Support Group Problem: The following occurs when trying to run an analysis: --------------------------- Error --------------------------- E801-4: Zero length element --------------------------- OK --------------------------- How to resolve this issue? Solution: The problem is that AutoPIPE is seeing a pipe length = 0.00. At some point in the model there are 2 node points are essentially occupying the same point in space. Thus producing this error message. However, where are these 2 node points? There are 2 popular approaches to finding these node points. Approach #1: 1. In the Input grid select the points tab: 2. Double click on the column heading "Length". 3. Search for non-grayed out cells, example A01. 4. Place grid back into original order by double clicking the top Left corner cell. 5. Review the issue an determine the best course of action. Approach #2: Another common location for this error is about a bend component. A bend is comprised of 4 node points: 1. Near, 2. Far, 3. Mid, 4. TIP. IF an AutoPIPE component is placed directly atop the Bend's Near or Far node points this message will appear. Again, best course of action is to move the AutoPIPE component or node point a short distance away from the Bend's Near and Far locations There are a couple of trick to finding these locations. 1. Select All bends in the model and look for components / node points that are directly atop the bend's near or far points. Example: 2. Look at the Bend tab of the input grids to see what bend radius are used in the model, calculate the bend radius distance, sort the Points tab based on length calculated, and review each occurrence where the length equaled the bend radius. Example: Bend radius = Long, pipe size is 6" or 8" dia, bend radius for long bend is 1.5 times nominal pipe OD., 6x1.5 = 9", 8x1.5 = 12", search points tab for 9" and 12", review each location for potential issues. Question: How to fix these issues when they occur: Example #1: In this model only, there was a segment that has Zero Length, best option in this case was to delete the entire segment. Using AutoPIPE commands, Select Segment (ex. C) and press Delete button to delete it from the model. Example #2 : In another scenario the problem may be fixed by 1 of 2 additional methods 1. Removing the offending node point Example: node point C01 is atop of Bend C02N node point. Delete C01 if not required OR 2. If 2 node points are directly atop one another in 3D space, insert a small distance between the 2 node points to prevent this message from being displayed. (ex. length greater than 0.01"). Example: the reducer small end point is directly atop of the Bend's Far (ex. B33F) node point. Add a small distance more between these 2 components. Note: This scenario occurred after importing a PXF model. Upon closer inspection of the original model in OpenPLANT, it was determined that there was a very small pipe run = 0.026 inches. Sometimes a completely review the original model looking for such modeling errors helps when translating the model to AutoPIPE. AutoPIPE Standard does not have the ability to perform a Flange Analysis to ASME Section VIII Div. 1 / 2 or Appendix XI, see the following AutoPIPE help section: Help > Contents> Contents Tab> Getting Started > AutoPIPE V8i Standard vs Advanced vs Nuclear, for document about version and features. Use the following procedure to perform an an ASME Section VIII Div 1 / 2 or Appendix XI Flange Analysis in AutoPIPE: 1. Open existing AutoPIPE model WALKTHRU.DAT from one of the following locations: A. C:\Bentley\AutoPIPE V8i SELECTseries\ B. C:\Bentley\AutoPIPE V8i SELECTseries\Examples\ 2. Analyze the model. Analyze> Analyze ALL. 3. Select Tools> Flange Analysis. 4. Analysis Method = " ASME Section VIII, Division 1 " 5. Select the " Load " tab from the grid. a. Example: Radial Flange Stress, SR = 161.968 115.142 1.407* Average Stress, (SH+SR)/2.0 = 150.616 115.142 1.308* This * at the end of a line means that these calculation results have exceeded the calculated allowable, i.e. the flange has failed. Why? Solution: In AutoPIPE V8i 09.05.xx.xx and lower, there is an internal limitation of 3000 psi for data entry. A new enhancement (CAE-CR-11051) has been logged to increase this limitation. Solution: This is an engineering judgement call that you must decide. Read AutoPIPE help "ASME Section VIII, Bolt Spacing Correction Factor" for details about this feature. Question: in reading help section there is a reference to "Leathel Service", that may not be perfectly clear. Does this refer to military vessels or to aeronautics? Answer: AutoPIPE help information was created based on information from a particular codes. Refer to the indicated code for definitions and terminology. In this case there are Two definitions of lethal service provided in ASME VIII Div 1, section UW-2. For legal reasons, Bentley does not provide code interpretations, the user must determine if a service is lethal. Solution: As indicated the soil calculations were performed using a specific size pipe. The indicated node point may not be the same size. Example: Message was displayed * * * W A R N I N G - MODEL * * * W2164-30: Outside diameter does not match with soil properties at following point(s) B35, C05 Review node point location: Review the soil properties and pipe properties for each location Node B35: One side of this node point was actually 10.75" dia and the other side was 8.625" dia However the soil properties were calculated based on Soil id = 10H where pipe OD = 8.625" dia. Node C05: On both sides of the node point pipe OD actually = 6.625" However the soil properties were calculated based on Soil id = 8V where pipe OD = 8.625". This warning will only appear when there are discrepancies between soil data and pipe data. Workaround: Soil OD and Pipe OD must match or this warning will appear. When warning appears, review the node points mentioned in the message and determin which value is right / wrong. Update the incorrect value. There may come a modeling scenario where the warning will continue to show. After a through review of the offending node points and determining that all values were found to be correct, accept the the warning will continue to appear in the consistency check report and ignore it. Product activation is not the same as checking out a license. This document describes how to configure AutoPIPE Vessel for activation. After initial configuration, AutoPIPE Vessel automatically and transparently tries to activate each time it runs, and runs unconstrained for a period of 30 days after its last successful activation. However, if activation is unsuccessful for a period of 30 days, AutoPIPE Vessel will not start until it is activated again. Activating a product using the Product Activation Wizard The Product Activation Wizard is designed to step users through the product activation process. After a product is installed, you must obtain a license and then activate that license. Obtaining the license alone is not enough to complete the process. This wizard eliminates the confusion and makes it clear that obtaining a license and activating a product are two essential steps. The Product Activation Wizard opens automatically (unless the "Activate product using Bentley License Tool" check box is turned off) at the end of the product installation process. Product activation is not the same as checking out a license. This document describes how to configure AutoPIPE Vessel for activation. After initial configuration, AutoPIPE Vessel automatically and transparently tries to activate each time it runs, and runs unconstrained for a period of 30 days after its last successful activation. However, if activation is unsuccessful for a period of 30 days, AutoPIPE Vessel will not start until it is activated again. Après la configuration initiale, AutoPIPE Vessel essaie automatiquement et de manière transparente de s'activer à chaque fois qu'il s'exécute, et fonctionne librement pendant une période de 30 jours après la dernière activation réussie. En revanche, si l'activation est infructueuse pendant une période de 30 jours, AutoPIPE Vessel ne démarrera qu'après avoir été activé de nouveau. TR Number: none Product: AutoPIPE Version: all Area: General Problem ID#: 79405 Solution: The process of saving an AutoPIPE model (*.DAT) file to an AutoPIPE Batch (*.NTL) file, and then opening the *.NTL file in AutoPIPE to create a new *.DAT file is referred to by us as "round tripping a model" Information is saved to the AutoPIPE model *.DAT file in a database format with very specific settings. The AutoPIPE BATCH file (*.NTL) is data written out from the database into another specific formatted text file (see AutoPIPE help for "Command Card Reference" details about how each component is formatted in the NTL file). When the NTL file is opened in AutoPIPE, the model is created based on the NTL file settings. Because of translating data from DAT to NTL back to DAT, any missing data will assume its default settings and all data referenced to a library file is refreshed. This is why it is VERY VERY IMPORTANT to follow this procedure: 1. Open original AutoPIPE model DAT file (Test.DAT) 2. Create a complete Model Input listing report with all sub reports enabled (ex. Test.RPT). 3. Run an analysis. 4. Select Results> Output report> ensure all sub reports are checked ON,(except “Sort Stresses” should be turned OFF), save Test.OUT. 5. Select File> Save As > AutoPIPE Batch (TEST-1.NTL) 6. Select File> Open> AutoPIPE batch (*.NTL)> select file (ex.Test-1.NTL) 7. READ and understand any reports that is automatically displayed (ex. CHK, MSG, etc..) 8. Repeat Steps 2-4, save files as Test-1.RPT and Test-1.OUT. 9. Use an application (i.e. Ultra Compare, Beyond Compare (free on internet)) to compare both Test.OUT and Test-1.OUT to CLEARLY see the differences. 10. IN MOST CASES, the new DAT file will need to be updated to match the original DAT file. Again, it is very important to perform this process of file comparison and/or to thoroughly review the new DAT file to be sure of model settings. Note: 1. Repeatedly, round tripping a model may reset some items to their default settings, therefore check all settings in the model especially under Tools> Model Options> General, Edit, and Results are correct. 2. Because this process rewrites the model database, this process can be used to filter / fix a model that has some peculiar unexplained issues occurring. 3. Another method to Filter / Fix a model is to create a new model with the same General model options as the original affected model. Than IMPORT the affected model into the new model. Change piping code from B31.3 to B31.1 because buried pipe option is not available in B31.3 B. Open Buried Pipe Options dialog (Tools> Model Options > Buried Pipe Result Options) and Press Ok so that buried pipe options pointer will be updated Answer #2: The analysis set has a fluid density factor that is blank. Solution: A. Open the analysis set, Load> Analysis set. B. Confirm that all Fluid Density Factors are not blank but have a valid value. Answer #3 The soil name is changes at a bend's Near node point. Solution: Soil property name should be the same around a bend or changes name only at the elbow's Far node point. Answer #4: Model has Valve with "Actuator Auto" turned off. Solution: for troubleshooting purpose set Valve with "Actuator Auto" turned ON. Answer #5: Program may terminate abnormally if invalid pipe found on NTL round trip Solution: Logged under CAE-TR-10662, to be added to newer version of the program (Corrected Version: 9.6 and higher). Program calculates bend far point coordinates based on bend point to the succeeding point. On NTL import, program checks if the bend point and succeeding point offset difference is almost equal to zero then it deletes the succeeding point. Similar method is followed for bend point and preceding point to get the bend near point coordinates.On deletion of point, it also deletes responding guid. Sir, I am using WaterGEMS V8i, Select series 5. Out of 62 pipes only a few are visible on the flex table, as shown in the screenshot. What should I do? Thanks, Dina

Hi All, My water network model in WaterGEMS was just working fine for a long time. However, suddenly some of the elements of the model have become invisible in the flex table and there is a note on the extreme right of the flex table as FILTERED. Kindly help. Dina
