Wiki Page: "Query is too complex" - Bentley AutoPIPE message

Applies To Product(s): AutoPIPE, Version(s): All Area: Message Original Author: Bentley Technical Support Group Nov 2014, AutoPIPE V8i 09.06.01.10 Problem: The following appears when reviewing the results grids: --------------------------- Bentley AutoPIPE --------------------------- Query is too complex. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- And then --------------------------- Bentley AutoPIPE --------------------------- The SELECT statement includes a reserved word or an argument name that is misspelled or missing, or the punctuation is incorrect. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- Why does this occur and how to avoid it? Solution: The problem is occurring due to the number of printable combinations exceeding 254. This is a database related limitation. AutoPIPE 12.04 and lower cannot specify more than 254 comparison cases as criteria in result grids while querying the database. This issue ( 644882) is general and is repeatable in a fresh model, if more than 254 combinations are created with print flag ON. The avoidance to the problem is to limit the number of combinations using 'Print' flag. This can be performed using Non-code combination tab of Tools->Combinations dialog. Unchecking the "Print" flags for some combinations, so that the total number of combinations with print flag enabled not exceeding 254, the issue can be avoided. A new enhancement has been logged (89315) and will be updated in a future version of the program. Update: - AutoPIPE 23 update 1 - will fix this issue (644882). - AutoPIPE 12.06.00.048 and higher can now handle a maximum of 1000 code and 1000 non-code combinations (including the default and user defined combinations) are available, for a possible total of 2000 combinations in the result grids and output reports. Q1. Whom can I contact with any questions regarding the AutoPIPE QA&R (Quality Assurance and Reporting) program? Answer: 1. QA&R Program Manager: Bruce Bader. email: Bruce.Bader@bentley.com 2. Contract or Sales: Joanie Mayberry email : Joanie.Mayberry@bentley.com , phone: (714) 685-6443 3. Software Quality Manager: Yaser Sohaib email: Yaser.Sohaib@bentley.com 4. Individual company designated points of contact When a company signs up to become a QA&R program member, a form 6-1-2, (Contact Personnel for "QA & Reporting" Subscriptions) is filled out. On this form are 4 categories for QA&R related deliverables. Each category must have a designated person(s) from your company to receive these deliverables (ex. they can all be the same person or different people for each of the 4 categories). Contact these people as needed. If you are unsure who is your point of contact at your company for a given category, send an email to one of the above 3 people asking for the information or file a Bentley Service Request referencing this wiki. Q2. What is the method for QA&R users to communicate potential AutoPIPE errors to Bentley ? Answer: All communications including potential errors should be reported to Bentley through service requests. Q3. What is the current version of the QA&R policy manual? How do I get a copy of it? Answer: The QA&R policy manual is sent to the point of contact specified on form 6-1-2, "Contact Personnel for "QA & Reporting" Subscriptions." It is then this person's responsibility to distribute it among company employees (only). In order to find out who your company's point of contact is, please send an email to one of the 3 people mentioned in the response to Q1 above. Once a new revision of the QA&R policy manual is ready, it is immediately sent out to the point of contact from each organization. These people will be able to answer questions about the latest policy manual version and if it is available to you electronically. Q4. What are the details of the installation testing package that Bentley provides for AutoPIPE in regards to how QA&R users can determine if AutoPIPE works properly after installation. Does Bentley provide acceptance criteria for the installation test results? Answer: Bentley provides 2 different utilities to test and validate AutoPIPE's installation: 1 . ATS (Acceptance Test Set) - only AutoPIPE QA&R users 2 . ITS (Installation Test Set) - all users Both utilities contain an automatic tool that runs a number of test models using AutoPIPE and compares the outcomes with pre-verified results. A successful comparison demonstrates that AutoPIPE is functioning as intended. ITS is a part of AutoPIPE's installer, thus available to all AutoPIPE users. However, the ATS is only made available to organizations that are a part of the QA program. The ATS runs more than 100 models, whilst the ITS only runs a few. Acceptance criteria for ATS/ITS test results are documented in the corresponding pdf manuals. Q5. What version of the AutoPIPE ATS (Acceptance Test Set) is currently available and how often does it get released? Answer: See ATS FAQ WIKI page here. Q6. Is AutoPIPE a 10CFR50 Appendix B certified application? Answer: AutoPIPE has been developed to comply with applicable portions of 10 CFR 50, Appendix B; 10 CFR 21; and ASME NQA-1. Remember that only AutoPIPE software installed from an official QA&R DVD sent by the QA manager has these certifications. AutoPIPE software downloaded off the internet does not meet these qualifications. Q7. Does AutoPIPE have a CofC (Certificate Of Compliance)? How can I get a copy of it? Answer : Are you apart of AutoPIPE QA program? If Yes see bellow: To get an official copy of an AutoPIPE CofC, p lease contact the QA&R Program Manager mentioned above. This person is the only one who can send out official documentation on the program. Please include complete contact information, company name, and AutoPIPE version number in use. Note: Both AutoPIPE and STAAD.PRO software are covered under Bentley Nuclear Quality Assurance program. Bentley's solutions for nuclear generation are widely used for safety-related applications. AutoPIPE's QA procedures have been and continue to be successfully audited by our major users since 2009. If No , see below: AutoPIPE CONNECT 11.00.00.22 and higher has a Validation Certificate Also, Bentley provides AutoPIPE Commercial users with an ITS (Installation Test Set) , so they can verify proper operation of AutoPIPE program once it has been installed on a computer. This feature is available in AutoPIPE 12.05.00.16 and higher. Use the Installation Test Set (Help > Install Test > Installation Test Set) command on the help ribbon. In addition, read the ITS documentation on how to use this feature. Q8. How are AutoPIPE error reports distributed? Answer: AutoPIPE monthly error report emails are sent to designated individual(s) as per the QA Form 6-1-2. This form is filed when signing up for the QA&R program. These points of contact can then distribute the reports to others in their organization as necessary. Note that monthly error reports are also posted to a private QA&R Community under the Bentley Communities website. Only designated individual(s) as per the QA Form 6-1-2 will have access to this community. If you are having troubles with accessing the private community, please click here . If you are not part of the QA program and are interested in learning more about it please send an email to the people above. Q9. What AutoPIPE feature are considered as Safety-Related? Answer: Please see the following AutoPIPE help section: Help > Contents> Search Tab> enter " AutoPIPE Functionality for QA Approvals " (without the quotes), See Also Bentley AutoPIPE

Wiki Page: 01. What to do when "load case did not converge" message appears in AutoPIPE?

Applies To Product(s): AutoPIPE Version(s): ALL; Area: Analysis Original Author: Bentley Technical Support Group Date Logged & Current Version Sept. 2016 10.01.00.09 Problem: When analyzing a model the following occurs: --------------------------- Confirm --------------------------- The load case did not converge. Do you wish to continue iterating? --------------------------- Yes No Cancel --------------------------- What can be done to avoid this message from appearing? Solution: Please see the following AutoPIPE help location. Help > Contents> Contents Tab> Reference Information> Analysis Considerations> Static Analysis> Nonlinear Analysis - Gaps, Friction and Soil Yielding Included > Failure to Converge. A nonlinear analysis will usually converge quite rapidly. However, some analyses may fail to converge, even if extra iterations are allowed. Failure to converge after »15 iterations will usually indicate that the system is unusually sensitive, suggesting that the supports ought to be modified. If the analysis does not converge after a reasonable number of iterations, the QUIT option, which cancels the analysis, should usually be chosen. If the accept option is chosen, the results should be examined carefully to ensure that they are acceptable. During a nonlinear analysis, an ASCII text file SYSNAME.LOG is created, where SYSNAME is the piping system name (specified on the System dialog). This file can be used to identify the support(s) which failed to converge. Open the SYSNAME.LOG file that was created, and scroll down to "ERROR SUMMARY FOR NONLINEAR SUPPORTS". Just above this line, see detailed information: Load case causing the problem, values calculated (compare to tolerance settings), node point where the non-convergence occurred, etc. There are 5 solutions offered. In addition, consider reviewing how the model is moving under the offending load case. Sometimes support gaps need to be decreased / increased. In other cases, additional supports are needed in key locations around the model to prevent the movement to cause a model to not converge. Or a combinations of all 5 solutions is needed to resolve the issue. Typical Solutions: #1. Press Yes to continue iterating a: Model does not converge after 5 iteration, should it continue to iterate or not? b. How to change number of iterations for static analysis? #2. Judging by the location and type of error, modify/remove the support. a. Read the *.LOG file? b. Make sure there are no unrealistic huge loads in the load cases that are not converging b. Piping model with Wave does not converge c. For submerged piping, may need to add concentrated or distributed weight to prevent it from uplifting (in practice concrete mats are added in some cases. d. For submerged piping on seabed, model using V-Stops instead of soil at a reasonable spacing (that will make it pass the sustained stress check). Also, may have to use large friction factors (0.5 to 1.0) for these supports. e. For submerged piping on seabed, review soil properties with very small K2 value, and with a huge concrete mattress load acting on the pipe in the downward direction. Making these values slightly more realistic seems to have resolved the issue. #3. Model with soil; modify soil properties and/or modify the "Max. Soil Spacing" setting. a. Confirm soil spacing is reasonable, Use AutoPIPE's help calculations as a guideline to this value. b. " Some more converging solutions for buried piping are to first try using nonzero K2 values in order to avoid unlimited displacements. Using larger K2 values temporarily (K2=K1/1000 or so) can help you see if P1 values are sufficient by checking displacements. By setting K1, K2, P1 to 0.01 N/m and 0.001 M/mm/mm, the model should converge with no problem. c. Look at the displacement plot for the non-converging load case. If there are spot huge displacement values, that may point towards an unrealistic stiffness of support at that location, or soil yielding at a certain location d. Crank up the soil stiffness values, including the K2 values. Huge displacements at locations which is solely supported by soil may indicate soil yielding under that load case. With a very low K2 value, the point would continue to displace even with a very small amount of force. e. Piping model with beams and soil does not converge f. Piping model with underwater piping resting on the seabed does not converge #4. Reset the static analysis to uncheck "Gaps/Friction/Soils", run the analysis, and look at the support reactions for abnormal large values that are fighting each other. #5. Modify non-linear analysis tolerance settings (i.e. Displacement Tolerance, Force Tolerance, Friction Tolerance (ratio), or Friction Scale Factor). Suggested tolerances for Victaulic models: Models with multiple Victaulic fittings seems quite sensitive and exerts a huge amount of forces. One setting that may help in converging an analysis would be to uncheck the Nonlinear Analysis option, "Pressure Before Temperature". Also suggest adjusting the displacement and force tolerances (0.1 in displacement, 100 lbf force tolerance). Applies To Product(s): AutoPIPE Version(s): All Area: Modeling Original Author: Bentley Technical Support Group Date Logged & Current Version Feb. 2016 10.00.00.10 Problem: There are various types of end connections on Vessels and Tanks: Dished only Elliptical 80% Dish 10% Knuckle Reversed Flanged Flanged only Shallow Flanged Hemispherical Toriconical ASME Flanged Standard Flanged Conical How to model piping connected the end of a tank / vessel in AutoPIPE? Solution: The technique is the same regardless of the Vessel's / Tanks's end type head construction. However there are 3 modeling approaches. 1. Consider the Vessel / Tank piping connection as an Flexible / Rigid anchor 2. Take credit for the flexibility in the tank construction, insert a Nozzle component then anchor element 3. Model the entire vessel / tank, add piping to surface with rigid piping See the following procedure and choose one or more techniques to use in your model: 1. Use an Anchor Element Assume the piping connection to the tank / vessel is considered an anchor component. Insert an Anchor element as needed. 2. Insert Nozzle Element and then Anchor element Please see the following AutoPIPE help section: Help > Contents> Contents Tab> Modeling Approaches> Modeling Approaches> Nozzles Hear are 2 examples of connecting piping to a tank / vessel using a nozzle element. 3. Model the entire tank / vessel Please see the following AutoPIPE help section: Help > Contents> Contents Tab> Modeling Approaches> Modeling Approaches> Vessels Note: in order to connect a pipe at B02, follow the techniques in option #2 above (omitting the anchor of course) Examples: 1. Connect multiple pipes to end cap Click here 2. Connect pipe to bottom of tank conical end click here 3. Connect pipe to Equipment Click Here See Also Modeling Vessel / Nozzles Bentley AutoPIPE

Applies To Product(s): AutoPIPE Version(s): ALL; Area: Modeling Date Logged & Current Version Aug. 2023 23.00.00.230 Problem: Model piping connected to Nozzle mounted on Equipment (Floating head of an Air Cooler)? Solution: There are a number of modeling approaches that one may consider with modeling equipment. Nozzle connection to the Equipment: 1. Modeled as a rigid / flexible anchor At the Nozzle flange or the base of the nozzle connected to the equipment enter a rigid / flexible anchor. 2. Take flexibility into consideration with Nozzle Element Similar to AutoPIPE help section: Help > Contents> Contents Tab> Modeling Approaches> Modeling Approaches> Vessel. Consider modeling with a pipe element - add flange set elements - to pipe element - to Nozzle element - to rigid pipe element - to center of beam element. 3. Take flexibility into consideration with NodeLink Element Insert a beam element to represent the equipment and restrain the beam using a number of supports (ex. Incline supports with Ultimate force gap, guide, rotational support, etc...). Insert a new segment starting at the surface of the beam / equipment. Next insert Piping to flange set and beyond to the field. Go back to the start of the segment and insert an NodeLink element with desired stiffness settings connected to the beam / equipment element. 4. Take flexibility into consideration with modeling all of the piping and equipment all the way back to the equipment supports using a combination of pipe, beam, anchor, etc.. elements In this scenario, model the equipment using beam elements all then way to its supports locations (ex. an air cooler is typically supported by 4+ legs, imaged below). Next, connect the piping to the equipment using one or more of the techniques mentioned above. See Also Model piping connected the end of a tank / vessel Bentley AutoPIPE
